This study investigates the perceptions and adherence to specific recommended dietary modifications among Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) Outpatient attending clinic in the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, Nigeria. Using intervieweradministered questionnaire and a convenient non-probability sampling technique, 50 patients diagnosed with T2DM at the Endocrinology Clinic and General Outpatient Clinic of LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, Nigeria were recruited. The data was analysed at the 0.05 level of significance and results presented using simple percentage. Majority of the patients were 60 years and above (54%) and were female (68%). The patients had good knowledge of T2DM (70%) and good nutritional status (64%.) The patients’ overall risk profile, body weight and food preference were unfavourable. There was a significant relationship between food preference and the nutritional status of T2DM patients (P<0.05). Also, there was an association between body mass index (BMI) at diagnosis (r =0.759, p<0.05) and current diagnosis (r =0. 911, p<0.05) with the patient’s nutritional status. Although majority of the T2DM patients have good knowledge and adhere to dietary modifications, they need nutrition education/diet counselling in order to sustain short- and long-term dietary changes that target blood glucose control.
